Course Description
The course is designed to equip healthcare professionals with in-depth knowledge and applied clinical skills for precision dosing and therapeutic monitoring in patients with compromised kidney and liver function. With the growing emphasis on personalized medicine and the risks associated with drug toxicity and therapeutic failure, clinicians must understand how physiological and pathological changes affect pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
Participants will explore the mechanisms of renal and hepatic clearance, drug adjustments in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and liver cirrhosis, and approaches to optimize treatment through evidence-based dosing models, monitoring parameters, and biomarkers. The course also covers clinical case applications in key drug classes, including antimicrobials, anticoagulants, cardiovascular agents, immunosuppressants, and chemotherapeutics. By the end of the program, learners will be able to apply renal and hepatic dosing principles in a wide range of therapeutic settings, particularly in complex and critically ill patients.
Key Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, scholars will be able to:
- Understand the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes associated with renal and hepatic impairment.
- Apply clinical tools and equations for estimating renal and hepatic function for dosing purposes.
- Identify drugs requiring adjustment and monitoring in patients with CKD and liver disease.
- Implement precision dosing strategies using therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), population PK models, and biomarkers.
- Optimize therapy in special populations including transplant recipients, ICU patients, and oncology patients.
- Interpret case-based scenarios to individualize pharmacotherapy in real-world clinical settings.
